Running to Charlemagne

Running to Charlemagne by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

Today's weather: 18c (64f)
Run distance: 43.88km (27.27mi)
Total run distance to date: 2455.92(1527.27 miles)
Song of the day: Psychology Lectures

Most of the run day was quiet and uneventful. It was much cooler so I didn’t even need to switch sweaty hats! Relatively cloudy today, but with much less wind than yesterday, which was nice.

The last 10km was mostly through the town of Repentigny, Québec. Much of its busier streets looked a lot like North Vancouver to Mandy, and there were some very beautiful homes and cars. You know you’re in a nice area of town when you pass two Rolls-Royces…or when two Rolls-Royces pass you!

With the increased population there was also a lot more positive energy being thrown my way: lots of honks, waves, hellos and a few solid fist pumps in the air. It was a nice change although the increase in population also meant more traffic maneuvering by my CRV team.

At the end of my 43km run today we stopped into the nearest gas station to stretch, change, pee and enjoy a Québon Lait au Chocolat. Unfortunately they didn’t have a public washroom, but…

Francis Paradis from that local Shell Select store on 213 Nortre-Dame made a contribution to the run by allowing me to use the employee only washroom. It was a small kindness that meant more than it may have seemed to the young man. THANK YOU FRANCIS!

We ended the day by driving into town in rush hour to pick up some of the Saxx men's underwear to add to my current pairs. These things are fantastic and have ruined me for all other underwear. We also picked up some more of the Vega Sports Drink and Whole Food Health Optimizer to aid me in my energy in the day. I consume allot of food right now. It's kind of scary.

Time for Stretching and sleep!!

Continuing along the St. Lawrence

Continuing along the St. Lawrence by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

  • Weather was humid 78% it was  20 c (68 F) and wind at 31 S.W. (basically I was running into the wind)
  • Today's run distance was 42.04kl (26.12m)
  • Total distance to date  2412.04kl (1500.00 miles) (Holy S**T that's a long way to run)
  • Song of the day: Not a song really Ricky Gervais Podcast's. Best part of short term memory loss. I can listen to the same podcast over and over again and still find it funny.
The weather was much cooler today but much, much windier as well. This made me feel like I was expending more energy than should have been required for the distance I was running. The extra energy to fight the wind seemed to exhaust me earlier than I would have liked. I figure, all in all, I probably ran for another 40-50 minutes than needed just to get in my final distance today.

Mandy says my run pace was much more consistent today versus the last few days, so I guess the feeling of constant fight against the wind was more apparent to me than to anyone else. Although my pants were blowing around “like Hammer pants” as Mandy so eloquently put it! It was also nice because Melissa got a half-day off from following me, so she got to settle in the RV in our camping spot, and do some real work!

Ran out of Trios-Rivieres and towards Montreal today, which should be a fun city to run through. Aside from the wind, my last hour of running was fraught with some heavy rain. It was especially wet because we washed my rain jacket and forgot to put it back into the car. I was quite soaked, but at least that washed some of the salt and sweat of my entire being.

Also a few close calls with some cars trying to cut off the CRV but not realizing that I was right in front of it. Always a little scary, and I always feel a little uncertain because I can’t always see or sense how much coverage the CRV is giving me. It was fine though and I ended the day unscathed.

Wind was the real excitement of the day.

Champlain through Trois-Rivieres and ending in Yamachiche

Champlain through Trois-Rivieres and ending in Yamachiche by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

  • Weather was humid 73% it was  23c (73 f)
  • Today's run distance was 41.98kl (26.09m)
  • Total distance to date 2371.98 kl (1473.880 miles)
  • Song of the day  Let's Get It Started by Black Eyed Peas

We parked off Route 138 last night which was butted up against the Saint Lawrence River. It was such a beautiful view and it was lovely to hear the water crashing about right by our RV. We hung our clothes to air on the line along the RV and had just loaded up with some yummy drinking water about 1km away so we were very spoiled.

After a night of battling a mosquito in my ear all night, I was lucky to find a much cooler day ahead of me. Although still muggy, the cooler temperatures through Sainte-Marie was nice as I ran closer to Trois-Rivieres. I felt much better than yesterday as indicated by me running almost 2.5 hours straight before taking a break. I kept on running until I hit roughly 26km.

Then, afternoon heat started to rear it's head, so we decided to break to move the RV and cool down. I did some much needed stretches, took a nice siesta and headed out to finish my run for the day. Unfortunately the RV was filled with too many mosquitoes and Québec in general has a lot of odd bugs! Think of a green dragonfly with a forked tail...pretty odd...

It was much cooler when we got back to where I left off, but as I started the second half of my marathon Mandy started with a portion of poutine covered in cheese curds and gravy that had a hint of BBQ sauce. I was lucky enough to snag a small bite!

A friendly 67 year old gentleman also joined me for a short jaunt. He was curious about the cause and ran along with me for a short stretch. He has run over 20 marathons in his lifetime and only stopped at the age of 63 because he needed and did get, a hip replacement. I urged him to stop running alongside me. The company was nice as was all the honking and waving! Then I continued running for another 15 km or so and then called it a day.

Running into a heatstroke

Running into a heatstroke. by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

After a late night (we didn't leave Eric and Gabrielle's kitchen until 11pm), but a roomy sleep outside of the RV, we were invited for a breakfast of granola, yogurt, cereal, fresh fruit, coffee and homemade crêpes! Boy were we spoiled! Eric is a fantastic cook and little Blanche was up fro playing after covering herself in toast, melon and cereal. It was quite the sight, and it was worth the later start despite the sudden hot weather.

Eric, Gabrielle, Blanche and Joe made our morning and their generosity was really endearing, and touched all three of us. We all left with a warm and fuzzy feeling, and some very full bellies! Thank you, thank you, thank you Eric, Gabrielle, Blanche and Joe! For more adorable pictures of Blanche et famille check out their travel blog: blancheacadie.quebecblogue.com

Started the run about 1.5 hours later than usual, and with the suddenly sunny weather, it was quite hot when we commenced. We ran through some beautiful small towns like Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade and Batiscan which had many little fruit stands, ice cream parlours and agricultural greenery. It was very beautiful but HOT to run through. Whew! After a few hat changes, head-towel changes and headband changes, I was still soaked in sweat!

With the dry weather came the heavy flowing and floating cottonwood! Poor Mandy fought off some allergies but thankfully with her and Melissa safely tucked into the air conditioned car, I was the only one getting the cottony bits in my mouth and eyes! Still kept trucking along though and ran, ran, ran.Kept running until the high sun decided to kick mu butt a bit with some heat dizziness. It was unpleasant but we stopped, moved the RV and allowed me to rest and siesta for an hour before tackling more running.

On the second go I only got about 5km before the dizziness set in again. I know that a night of rest will do me good on that. Had a nice dinner, and am now going to tackle my stretch routine before heading to bed for a nice long sleep.

Running into Blanche and Joe

Running into Blanche and Joe by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

Last night was the second and last night at the Campground, which was right along the Saint Augustine Lake. So we started the day with the RV following me for the first hour of the run, and then we parked it at a Canadian Tire for the rest of the run day.

It has been very rainy, damp and cold mingled with the humid smog of a Québec summer. However, along the run the weather started clearing up and by the last 5km of running it was genuinely sunny. I was even able to strip off the waterproof running jacket!

Today we ran towards the city of Trois-Rivières via Route 138. The route was very country-esq even though we were so close to Québec city in a way. In fact part of the running route ran through lots of farm or livestock land, and there was even a section that was Route of Flowers. It was quite pretty, especially as the sun was starting to burst through the cloudy grey sky!

There were a few fun signs that Mandy noticed, like the "Fromagerie de Grondines" which was placed next to a huge cartoon image of a Suisse Cheese triangle. Or the little handwritten sign stating "Hot Dogs Frites Poutine 1km" which made the girls cheer me on to continue running toward the eats! It made Mandy sad when I ran past the waving people at the big red food truck.

I ran # of km today and felt good. I ran about the first 20km with little rest which felt good this morning. It was hard because Québec weather could not decide if it wanted to actually rain or not, so it was like a broken shower hose that you're trying to fix but keeps turning itself on and off of high pressure showering. It was refreshing though, I guess, and washed the salty sweat off my face!

The day ended around 4pm. A family of bikers had passed me not 10 minutes prior to the end of my day, and after getting happy claps from the female at my urging the male to wear a helmet, they rode back towards me to invite me to their home. It was such a sweet gesture! They offered us a place to stay and dinner with company.

We ended up having a wonderfully delicious home-cooked meal with Eric, Gabrielle, 9-month Blanche and
Joe (the dog). It was such an amazing meal with warm and kind company which was a first on the run. We drove the little distance to Saint-Stanislas to the "English" community where they had just returned to their family home after a 25 day biking trip to the Magdalen Islands (Îles-de-la-Madelaine)
and back. Very cool and hospitable family that I feel confident to say will be the highlight of our time in Québec.

This is the river right by the House.

Another Marathon in Quebec

Another Marathon in Quebec by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

Today’s weather was 14 Celsius (58 Fahrenheit) slightly cloudy and a little humid

Today's run distance was 42.23 Kl (26.25 miles)

Total run distance to date is 2400.51 kl or (1492.264 miles)

Song of the day: “The Best of You” Foo Fighters

Rough start to the day. It's been hard getting used to Mandy being here and it definitely is throwing me off my routine. Hopefully in a few days she will be adjusted too and then we'll both be able to cope better to each other's presence. Not to mention the crappy sleep that I've been having because of my blanket-hog wife!

The change in route has also thrown me of as we were running through the city today which meant more turns, stops and confusion. The traffic lights here 4-way stop all the cars so all pedestrians on all sides can walk at the same time. Mandy and I crossed diagonally once. This different crosswalk system means I was running during the pedestrian walk light but Melissa and Mandy could not drive as they had a red. It took a little while to clue in and decide I best wait for the traffic green so the CRV and I don't get too separated.

There was a bit more love coming from the city today then we've seen from Québec so far. More honking cars and people waving which was boosted my spirits. Although there was a toilet issue early on in our day. The first gas station's toilet was clogged with brown paper towel, which could not be fixed because it's Saint Jean Baptiste weekend. The second gas station couldn't access their toilets because someone locked the key in the washroom. The third place didn't have a toilet (not sure why because Mandy didn't ask or clarify for me). FInally, the fourth place was the charm! Thank you auto-repair shop! I informed Mandy that I needed the shop to know that if they could not provide I toilet I might relieve my bladder in their shop...Mandy refused but we found the world's grimiest toilet. The faucets didn't even work, although Mandy felt relieved there was toilet paper.

As the run went along I felt better and better and was more into my run flow, which is hard in a city but eventually we were more just outside the city on a 'bigger' 4-lane road so it was easier to just run straight. The scenery was fantastic and I even had my hand sniffed by a horse.

However being in a small motorhome with two type a personality females get's a little much. It's nice to get out and run. Get some me time ;')

•        Total run distance to date is 2358.28 kl or (1466.0139 miles)
•        Song of the day: “Easy” Barenaked Ladies (Made me think of my wife)

First day running with my wife in town was great. Melissa was driving the CRV, Mandy was co-pilot and I was, well, running in the rain and cold by myself. So the girls got to chat and talk about how strange I am while I ran in the rain.

Then I had a massage at Masseo Massage www.masseo.ca by Patricia who beat me up quite nicely. I have had a few massages so far on the run. They each had their own style of massage. Patricia was like an artist. She could find the spots on me without pushing really hard and deep. She surveyed the parts that were really in pain and injured, and when she sensed a really tough place, then she went all out. It was quite different from any other massage and masseuse I have encountered thus far.

Tomorrow I will be in the heart of Québec City. It will be an interesting day of running with the Saint Jean Baptiste holiday which is a very large holiday in Québec. So tomorrow will be me running through a town that has a party mood. As I said it should be very interesting.

C'est la Vie Part 1 by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

Run #1C'est la Vie Part 1 by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

·        Today’s weather was 24 Celsius (75 Fahrenheit) slightly cloudy and a little humid
·        Today's run distance was 38.75kl [-6kl of driving is 32.75] (20.3499 miles)
·        Run distance was 6.88kl (4.275 miles)
·        Total run distance for the day 39.63kl (24.6429 miles)
·        Total run distance to date is 2292.33 kl or (1424.7579 miles)
·        Song of the day: “Stuff is Messed Up” The Offspring

Where to start? Well I guess at the beginning. My left leg was feeling better after some serious hours spent stretching and a robaxoset and a night with no muscle seizing. The day started off good. We have a good routine in the morning. We are very efficient. Well Mellissa is; I just get up, eat and run.

We head out to run start and we are about an hour in and I hear the Melissa honk behind me. I see she has been pulled over. This surprises me as we were pulled over yesterday and stopped by a Quebec Officer. The female officer yesterday had no problem with us running on the shoulder of the highway. We have the right safety lights, we hug the side of the shoulder. The shoulder is also very wide. I mean a big rig can pull on the side and not block the traffic. So a CRV and a runner don’t take up much room. Yesterday the officer sent us on our way.

Today we were not as lucky. The male officer advised us that we cannot be on the shoulder. We advised him we had asked for permission but Quebec Highway’s department never responded to letters, email, or phone calls. He was not interested and directed us off the highway.

So we drove to a different road that is a little out of the way, and continued on. The only problem with this alternate route is it’s a two lane road with very narrow shoulder if any shoulder at all. So at times I am actually running on the road itself while the SRV takes up about ½ of the lane. This forces a stream of cars to pile up behind us, or when they are not that patient, shoot by us into the oncoming traffic. However it was a much more scenic route and we had some great responses from the citizens of Quebec.

So tomorrow we will continue along route 132!

We will also be picking up Mandy to join us for a couple of months tomorrow night. That makes me very happy. I am sure Melissa is looking for someone else to distract from talking to her as well. A month in a motorhome with me would get on anyone’s nerves!

Broken run

Broken run by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

Today's run distance was about 7kl (4.34 miles)
Total run distance to date is 2250.30 kl or (1404.455 miles)
Song of the day. Listening to the Wiretap Podcast from CBC

Last night my left leg started to seize. It just locked up. It was very painful and it woke me up. After a few minutes of really deep pain and crying like a baby, I managed to get it to unlock and move it a little bit. I did some night time half asleep stretches and even punched it a couple of times. Eventually I was able to get back to sleep.

Upon walking it was definitely tight. I figured that getting the blood flowing while running might loosen it up. This did not happen. In fact with each step it started to hurt more and more. The thought of running for 5 hours on this was not making it any easier.

I talked to Melissa and tried to problem solve. The options were, as I saw them, continue running and just deal with the pain as best I can. Or take a day to stretch, heat, and an added suggestion by Melissa take something to relax the muscle.

We headed to a Pharmacy and got some Robaxocit. I took one pill and we headed back to the campground to stretch. I spent about an hour stretching with Melissa holding my leg and adding some pressure. This was helpful and I felt the "tight knotted area" loosing up a little bit. I continued to stretch on the ground in campground. Much to the amusement of some campers walking by.

I contemplated going back out to finish the day, or at least get some more distance in. My theory is rest for the day, do some deep stretches and some massage tricks that know. Take another Robaxocit at night and let the muscles repair. Then get up and give her tomorrow.

There is no guarantee this will work. If it doesn't make it better than I will just run in the pain. It's only a few more months of running each day. How bad can it get ;')

Total run distance to date is 2253.30 kl or (1400.115 miles)
Song of the day. Psychology 101 Podcast from MIT Open learning.

Today we were stopped by Quebec Provincial Police. It was a female officer and she advised us that there had been some calls about us being on the highway. We advised the officer (in English) that we had contacted the police in Quebec and had not heard back.

I informed her that I had not only run with some of the officers from other provinces but we had also had escorts with the horses and the motorcycles. She did not seem to have much of a problem with us. She saw we had the proper safety lights on the CRV and that I we were not taking up any of the road. Melissa handed her a brochure on our run and we were off again. Breathing a sigh of relief.

It all worked out and we were off again. Running down a very flat, very long road hugging the St Lawrence river.

There was some heavy road work being done. All the road crews and the Department of Transportation were very nice and encouraging. At least I think they were. I don't speak French.

We are staying in camp ground called La Demi-Lieue in Saint Jean Port Joli. It is quite large and if my ankles didnt hurt so much I would probably walk down to the St Lawrence. Well maybe I will after dinner anyway. I have been to the St Lawrence river.

A special shout out to my Uncle Harry!! He is apparently following my blog posts. Harry my ankles are sore but they are holding up. Lot's of stretching and ice. My wife will be joining us soon so I am sure she will give them some of her TLC. Looking forward to going for a run with ya!! Hello to all the Coull's as well. Thanks for being there so much right now. It means allot. So hello Nancy, Adam, and Sue and the kids. I am expecting you all to be up to marathon distance by the time I get there. ;')

From St-Louis Du Ha! Ha! (I am not kidding that is the name of the City

From St-Louis Du Ha! Ha! (I am not kidding that is the name of the by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

I am so glad to have internet back! Now we are not at campground so we don't have our hookups i.e. Power, Water, Sewer etc but we do have internet with our 3G phones from Rogers. So we are parked the RV outside a Wal-Mart and will be here for one more night before we move to the next campground.

So this is my first long blog post since getting into Quebec. We moved our clocks 1 hour forward and took some pictures at the Provincial Border.

I have had some issues with my Achilles tendon and after talking with Christian at Foot Solutions in Vancouver he suggested some an ice soak and some different stretches. While I am pretty good at following my stretching routine. Melissa reminded me that I am pushing my body beyond what most "stretch instructions" would be good for. So I am spending at least an hour a day doing nothing but stretching. In fact I am stretching right now as I type this. Now that is multitasking.

I am definitely sore and my body is starting to feel the daily grind. However I am holding up.

The chaffing issues that made each day's run very painful has been handled. Saxx  generously supplied with a few pairs to try out let me just say they are FANTASTIC. I mean it's only underwear right? Well wait until you need them and you don't have them and you will understand. Or just get a pair before you run across the country and save yourself some very painful showers.

Tomorrow we are moving again. Our current location is Rivière-du-Loup, QC Wal-Mart!!
