Running to Penticton B.C. Where I did the 2009 Ironman

Running to Penticton B.C. Where I did the 2009 Ironman by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

  • Weather: Low of -1c High of 1c (30.2 F to 33.8 F) A little cloudy. Pretty strong headwind.
  • Distance for today: 41.41 km (25.73 mi)
  • Total Distance to Date: 7357.59 kl (4579.48 mi)

Today was a little windy. However I have had my win training by now. I built a nice base "wind" core strength exercise.

Okanagon Lake!!
It was pretty cold this morning. However it was nice to be running after a couple days of not feeling top notch.
Hello Summerland.

The day went well. I do seem to have some tummy issues near the end of the run. This caused me to jumping in the Motorhome every 10 minutes to use the facilities.
I'm coming Penticton

I have run to Penticton. Home of Ironman Canada!!
Yeah!!

Penticton has a very special place in my heart. When I originaly had my brain surgery and was spending time recovering. I trained for my first Marathon. I ran the Chicago Marathon with my Sister less than a year after leaving the hospital.

This was a major achievement for me. Not only because I was not only walking and talking but I have achieved something I had never thought I could. Not only did I never think I could run a marathon pre-injury, to do so after my brain injury was a major accomplishment.

When I got back after the Marathon I taught a couple of running clinics and I started to train for the Vancouver Triathlon. This was an Olympic distance triathlon. The Olympic distance triathlon is 1.5 km swim, 40 km ride, 10 km run (.9 m swim, 24.85 m bike, 6.2 m run).

I was hooked on the excersice bug. For no other reason than I felt fantastic, I built my confidence and I was able to complete it. It was not even the race day itself. It was the scheduling, the training, and the bragging rights upon completion.

The Ironman was a whole different event. Training alone took about a year. Scheduling was intense. I would work out 4-8 hours a day while working and going to school. The distance of an Ironman is huge.  3.8 km swim, 180 km ride, and a marathon: 42.2 km run (2.36 m swim, 111.8 m bike, 26.2 m run) It was 16 hours of intense physcal excersision.

When I crossed the finish line. I was on top of the world. I had completed something that I thought was for elite athletes. I was an Ironman.

I spent 16 hours swimming, biking, and running through Penticton. It was a major accomplishment. I had done something I thought was impossible. This is why Penticton has such a strong place in my heart. It is where I became and Ironman.

On my trip to Penticton this time. I got to meet city council.

Thank you Penticton City Council.

We were also able to meet some of the local Brain Injury Association staff. I have completely forgotten not on the name of the organization but also the name of the staff. I will update this tomorrow because they made a huge effort to be at City Hall for me.

Passing Through Kelowna!!

Passing Through Kelowna!! by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

  • Weather: Low of -12c High of -2c (10.4 F to 28.4 F) A little cloudy. No wind.
  • Distance for today: 35.66 km (22.15 mi)
  • Total Distance to Date: 7316.18 kl (4553.75 mi)

After a much needed sick day. I was up and moving this morning. Melissa picked up from the Hotel at 10:40 and we drove back a little bit to the part of the run I had to stop so we needed to run that bit, before driving ahead and picking up where I left up after the 10km run from the day before.

It was really cold today. There was not a significant wind so that was nice. I had to change gloves as my fingers started to freeze. I still find it interesting when my water bottle freezes.

However I am once again in awe at how beautiful it is. I highly recommend you get out and take a look at what is just outside your door. While I don't recommend running across the country. I do recommend a nice walk, or hike, or a bike ride. It's a totally different vantage point when your not in the car.

I am feeling better but I am still sick. As we didn't start the run until a little later I ran until sunset and called it a day when I couldn't see the black ice on the road.

Feeling a little better

What a view

Construction.

Vancouver!!

It's a little cold!! Yes that's ice.

More beautiful scenory.
Another amazing day.

A Quick Little 10km Run Through Kelowna

A Quick Little 10km Run Through Kelowna by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

  • Weather: Low of -4c High of -1c (24.8 F to 30.2F)Snow, oh so much snow.
  • Distance for today: 9.77 km (6.07 mi)
  • Total Distance to Date: 7280.52 kl (4531.6 mi)
  • Song of the Day: I did not feel save enough to listen to music. I needed all my wits with me.

OK this Blog is dated November 18th 2011. While it is actually the Data from Yesterday.

What can I say about the run today. Talk about sensory overload.

We started off the day with a little visit to Kelowna Secondary School.

Fantastic School. Great kids.

A little Jaunt through Town

They kicked my but running. I need to train harder

After the school presentation, that was AWESOME, I was back to running.

BMO Showed up to for some surprise suport. Thank you guys

I am really sick on this day. I had about 10kl in me and it took everything I have.

After the school, that was AWESOME, and running through Kamloops with the RCMP support vehicle. I was really starting feel the cold. Melissa dropped me off at the Best Western and I headed up to my room to have a quick nap.

I knew that we had a presentation and another talk that night. However I was not expecting what happened next.

First it was the Peach Tarts Roller Derby Girls.
Add caption

I was roller bladed into a big presentation (and cake....oh the cake) I was welcomed by well look at them all!!

There was the Mayor Sharon Shepard of Kelowna, BDO and it's staff. Corbin from BrainTrust Young Adults Group, BrainTrust Board of Directors and Staff. The local radio and new media and of course the Fantastic RCMP. Did I mention the cake......oh the cake.

I then when to my room and past out at about 6:30 or and woke up at 5:00 am. I had not gotten out of my close or uploaded data or anything. I was out.

This morning was still snowing pretty hard. Melissa and I were going to get up and put in a bit of a run. However the weather did not look good. With me not feeling the best we decided to call it a no run day. There were several engagements already scheduled so I was not loosing to much distance.

We also think it's better to rest up a little bit rather than risk further illness.

So I headed to a Mount Boucherie Secondary School of West Kelowna and met another great group of students.

We also got to meat the Mayor of West Kelowna Doug Findlater and had another great presentation.

Go Bears!!

Yeah that's me but check out that Bear

A captured audience. I was talking about video games.

Mayor Doug Findlater

After the school we headed over to Andre's Electronic Experts.

Andre's electronics has been running a fund raiser for the run and were just a great group of guys. I made one mistake and that was to forget to write down there names. So I will edit this later when I talk to Melissa.

Crap I forgot there names.
I then headed to a massage at Sun City Physio. I had my body beaten really well. I want to thank Sun City for such a fantastic body pounding. They know there stuff.

After the massage I headed back to the Hotel and had Foot care by Leah of WeCare Kelowna. All of the foot nurses from We Care have been fantastic. I always enjoy hearing about there nursing stories as that was something I was really interested in doing after my brain injury.

Hi Leah.
So with my body pounded, my feet nursed up, and my cold kicking in. I let Melissa know that I was not up for a Braintrust Party tonight. There getting together with a band called Ethel and I am wiped out. It's been an amazing couple of day's and I am doing my best to recover from my cold so I can finish strong.

Running into a Snow Storm

Running into a Snow Storm by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

  • Weather: Low of -7c High of -1c (19.4 F to 30.2F)Lightly cloudy until the snow storm.
  • Distance for today: 39.04 km (24.25 mi)
  • Total Distance to Date: 7270.75 kl (4525.53 mi)

Wow that was a day. It started with Melissa driving back from Kasey's house were she stayed last night, to the motorhome where I slept last night. She picked me up and we were off to Yesterday's run stop and turn it into today's run start.

The run starts!!

Then we got the run started with Kasey driving the RV so Melissa could do some work on the computer.

Moving through town.

Hello Vernon
Hello Lake Country

Kasey and Marcie

Inside the motorhome they were having a great time. With Melissa driving and Kasey and Marcie there was a Braintrust Office party going on. I enjoyed the weather outside.

The fantastic Okanagon lake side.

Vernon Vipers Hockey Team

I got to meet up with the Vernon Vipers Hockey Team. I talked about concussion and the importance of reporting concussions.

Magda and Me at the meeting.

We were able to use the Nixon Wenger Office space and meet there staff. along Mayor Wayne Lippert, CEO of Braintrust Maribeth Friesen, and the board members of Braintrust Gary Weatherill, Bill Dick, Patricia Neilson

BrainTrust Board Members.
When I first had the idea to do something to raise the awareness of Brain Injury I contacted allot of people. From the beginning Braintrust Canada was supportive. If it was not for the board members of Braintrust believing in this crazy idea I would not be here.

So a huge thank you for helping me reach out to all the people we have. Melissa and I are the faces seen most on the run. We are the "front lines" of the Run To Remember, however it is people Like Casey, Magda, Maribeth who run the office. The Run To Remember is not the only thing going on. They still run a Brain Injury organization with clients, and staff like Marcie who are on the front lines of working with people with brain injury. They are the ones who work with the families of survivors, provide services for all parts of brain injury. They fill that never ending hole when you leave the hospital. They try to clear the confusion and offer the appropriate services for each unique brain injury.

This run would not be possible without all these people. It just wouldn't. Thank you all.

So much more happened today than I can go into right now. From the hockey players to the Mayor and the CEO of Braintrust and the Board members. On top of this I am fighting a cold and need to get some sleep!! I have a marathon to run tomorrow.

It was just a straight run day. However I do have a sore through, cough and some body soreness.

Other than that it was a great run day.

Perfect.

I'm a little ill so I am going to stretch, and fall asleep now.
