First run on Prince Edward Island

First run on Prince Edward Island by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

All I can say is PEI is where fairy tales must have started. What an incredibly beautiful place. So far every single step of the Marathon has been stunning.

I ran a full marathon today. Getting my running body back. Tonight will be the final day on the prescription for the food poisoning so I am looking forward to no more side effects. It's 6:08 and I am typing on the kitchen table of the motorhome. Melissa is driving and we are off to crash at a hotel tonight and get some famous Lobster Dinner!!!!

Stunning province.

Statues Anyone?

I ran to Prince Edward Island!!

I ran to Prince Edward Island!! by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

Today felt much better. I am getting some of my strength back. Looking forward to more adverse reactions from one more day of my prescription. I am starting to feel like Dave again. The weather is starting to get a little warm and I am turning into a faucet of sweat. I ran all the way to the Confederation Bridge and had to stop. It is the longest bridge to run over Ice filled water and is over 12kl long (8miles).

Upon getting off the bridge and entering PEI you are hit right away by a very old sense of small town. Not only the home of Anne of Green Gables but also some of the worlds best lobster. I am expecting Melissa to take me out to dinner.

Weather was nice today. It's getting a little hotter and I know run with a cloth in my hat!! Seriously. Melissa has pics.

Stomach is still bugging me. Getting some pretty serious cramps and acid reflux. Only a few more days of the pills and I should be much better. At least I am killing the fungus in my stomach!

Just finished stretching and going to eat!

I Have run to New Brunswick

I Have run to New Brunswick by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

Well it has been an interesting last week or so. Five days of food poisoning. Several days of adverse reactions to the first set of prescription. I am now on a different prescription that seems to be doing the job without killing me. So today I was able to run for close to 40kl.

We have made a few changes to the run schedule. I am running for 2 hours then I am taking a short break. Then I run for two more hours take a longer break. Then I finish off the distance. Hoping to get in another 2 hours and maybe surpass the 42kl mark. There was a run a few weeks back that I did run 45kl. It was a while back!!

So if I the one thing I was not prepared for in Newfoundland was the wind. The one thing I was not prepared for in Nova Scotia were the black flies. I don't much care for them.

That all being said. Tomorrow I will pass on into New Brunswick. I am feeling way better. Still not a %100 but I am getting back to my proper fluid levels and actually enjoying the run again. Looking forward to tomorrow. Right now I need to sleep!!

Debert Station through Westchester Station

Debert Station through Westchester Station by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

Getting back into the grove of things since being sick. Have to rebuild my fluids. Apparently five days of an unhappy digestion system and inability to keep things in takes it's tole on your fluids ;')

So I ran as far as I could before going into a state of dehydration again.

Getting a great new schedule for the run together. Breaking the day up to avoid the heat as much as possible. Looking forward to being off the medication that makes me feel like my feet way to hundred pounds.

All in all starting to feel better and I am back to my full apatite.

1st half of run was 26 kl. 2nd half of run.

1st half of run was 26 kl. 2nd half of run. by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

I forgot my Garmin this morning. So I ran 26kl and then we had to pause to go pick up the RV. It was about a 40 min drive or so. Once there we hooked up the CRV to the RV to Walmart parked the Motorhome and then drove back to the last run stop. I ran another 13kl or so. We also found a great campsite. Called  Hidden Hilltop

So it was a long day of lot's of running and lots of driving and then more running. However I did have my first great shower in about a week. Much to the teams pleasure I am being told.

So now it's time to eat, stretch, sleep.

Back to running

Back to running by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

Forgot to turn off my Garmin from about the 25 or 26kl mark. I pulled in a little more than 1/2 marathon. As I have not fully recovered I was a little week. However I am feeling much, much better. I was dreaming of running. There is something seriously wrong with that.

Running with CBC Halifax's Tom Murphy

Running with CBC Halifax by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

Yesterday's run with the RCMP and Halifax Integrated Police escorting me was hard to top. Until this morning when Halifax's own CBC Anchor man Tom Murphy showed up to run/interview with me. I let him know I wasn't fast so he took it easy on me. We had a great run and he asked fantastic questions and he was curious about not only my brain injury, but other kinds of brain injury.

The interview will be on our website as soon as it airs, or slightly after.

I just wanted to give Tom and his camera man a huge thanks. Thanks for taking the time to here my story and help us get the story out there for kids and adults to put on some helmets and protect your head. A brain injury changes you forever. It encompasses everything and changes your world and the world of those around you.

Put on a helmet!!

Today I rolled over on my ankle. I had to take a quick break in the bushes at the bottom of a big drop off. On my way down I rolled on the my left foot. Same one I keep rolling on. I new immediately it was not good. However I was not going to turn down an opportunity to run with Tom. They came all the way out to see me and help get the awareness going. So I ran a little more than 14kl (I forgot to start my Garmin in the beginning). I was a little over stimulated and still dealing with a sun burnt yet from yesterdays epic run in Halifax. So I grinned and bared it and put on a good face.

After running for a while after the news was gone. I new that if I continued I would seriously cause more damage. I still have to run tomorrow. So I called it a day.

My team manager Melissa was a rockstar today. Just amazing. This would not be happening without her.

Thanks Melissa.

Halifax Kicks Butt!!

Halifax Kicks Butt!! by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

So the Mayor of Halifax was unable to join me today. He was busy doing mayor things. However after my first 5kl or so I was met by Joe Lively from the Brain Injury Association of Nova Scotia. Joe has been a huge part of getting awareness out there for us and for brain injury as well. I always like having company when I run. However Joe is much faster than me. He has finished a Marathon in under 4 hours. The best I have done is 4:20 I think.

We ran to the Halifax city hall. Where we were met by Lyle Hart who is a CBC TV Reporter/Camera man/Videographer/Driver/jack of all trades. He wanted to get some shots of Joe and I running at city hall. He was also chatting with Judy and Gerry, my parents, who where also there to meet us.

So we do some video shots and then get ready to head out. To our shock the Halifax Police Department showed up to escort. These two guys on the bikes were AWESOME!! (I am so sorry guys I forgot your names) I headed out to run about 10kl with the Police motorbike escort blocked traffic. It was so amazing. Stopping traffic letting me run through red lights, blocking intersections. Then we hit the highway. As I run along in the middle of the highway and not hugging the side to allow cars to pass. I own the road. It was totally surreal.

We come up to incoming intersection and there is traffic backed all the way up about 1/2 kl of traffic. There is an RCMP car blocking traffic. Melissa was behind me and I motioned for her to come up. She pulls up beside me and rolls the window down as I continue running "Are they doing this for us"?
Melissa with a huge smile says "yup"

For about 10kl on the highway I was followed by two Halifax Police and behind me was Melissa in the Run To Remember CRV (thank you Honda Canada) with an RCMP Squad car behind her. Totally amazing.

As we got to run stop the four police officers, Mellisa and I head to Starbucks. We had a coffee and I talked a little bit about my injury and brain injury and just chilled with some of Canada's finest. They made fun of the one officer from PEI.

I had a great time with the Officers and I thanked them for what they do and for taking the time to help us out with this important topic.

I then had a Foot Massage Appointment. I got a full hour massage from Tanisha and Sore Spots Massage. She donated an hour of massage for my tired legs. She beat me up in such an enjoyably painful away. Now I have had a few massages in my day. I like sports or deep tissue massage. Let me just say that Tanisha beat me up. She is one tough massager. Thanks Tanisha.

I got back to the hotel and I had a 15 minute hot tub, update my run data, and now I sleep!! Do it all again tomorrow.

Great run. Met with some kids at the local school. Had some cafeteria food that brought me back to my highschool days. Then back to run. Forgot to turn off Garmin when I drove to school. So it wasnt a full 43 kl. It will be about -4 kl or so.

Run again tomorrow.

Heatherton to Antigonish

Heatherton to Antigonish by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

So today's end was a challenge from the start. My feet felt heavy, I couldn't get into the groove. I have the Ricky Gervais podcast on my I phone and I started laughing really hard. Because I was a little off I was not paying attention to the road and wound up stepping funny on my ankle.

I ran for about another 10kl. I new I had hurt it but I also know, from previous experience with strains and sprains, that if I took off my shoe or stopped. It would swell. So I kept going until I got the point where I could finish todays run but I would not be running tomorrow. Or I can stop now and possible run tomorrow if I take care of it.

My great run organizer Melissa has some experience with extreme sports and picked me up some stuff to promote healing and get me up and running tomorrow.

So now I Ice, elevate and gently stretch my foot.

Little Narrows and through Whycocomagh

Little Narrows and through Whycocomagh by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

Today was  fantastic day from the towns of Little Narrows and Whycocomagh. It seemed like everyone was honking and people were coming from all over to make donations.

One that stands out was Daniel and she ran down from her house and gave us $4.75. She came running across the lawn just to give it to us.

People like Daniel are the one the best parts of the run. So eager to help, asking for nothing in return. It means so much.

Mom and Dad continued with me for another 4 hours or so.

I forgot to start my watch after one of my rests. However I belief that today was the longest run I have done so far. It was one of loudest at all the honks on the street and the multiple cars pulling over to make donations.

Plus my feet feel fantastic since yesterdays medical treatment!!

Foot Solutions Halifax and Brain Injury Association of Nova Scotia

So today was a no run day. It was a long drive to Halifax to the Foot Solutions. We were met by the owner David and he had some supplies sent from the Foot Solutions Vancouver for me. I also picked up a few new pairs of shoe's.

The Brain Injury Association of Nova Scotia had arranged for a Nurse to meet me there and fix up my feet. Over 30kl a day of consistent running can work the feet pretty hard. They had also arranged for Brian who worked for Snap Halifax to take some photo's and help get the story of Brain injury out there.

Both the Nurse (sorry I forgot her name but it should be on the brain trust website) and Brian (My mom remembered her name) were fantastic.

We then had a meet and great at the Brain Injury Association of Nova Scotia annual general meeting. This was magical. This is why I am doing the run. It was preaching to the converted as far as brain injury goes. So I got to change my normal speech to talking to people that no it all to well.

What was fantastic was the people. From survivors, to caretakers, to medical people to fantastic artists. It was a room full of my peep's.

I was blown away by Laura Smith. Such an incredible artist who brings her own personal story to every song she sings. There is no auto tune. This is a musician singing from her heart. It was something very special.

Today was a very over stimulating day for me. Lot's happening. So I am sorry that my brain shut's down when it's over stimulated. It's like a computer running to many programs at one time. It all just shuts down.

However I have new shoes, healthy feet, a belly full of food and some much needed rest. Tomorrow here I come.

Trugging along in Baddeck

Trugging along in Baddeck by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

I was having a bit of a rough run today. My ankles are hurting and I had a huge lack of energy. I kept on trucking and was at about the 3 hour mark and decided to take a minute and rest up at a Gas station in Wagmatsook. We pull in and Melissa is there so we can do a Skype chat with BrainTrust Canada annual convention.

While waiting a Gentleman and his daughter come over to the SUV. He said he saw me running yesterday and wanted to meet me. He had his daughter Keanna with him and she handed a small drum her mom had made. It was so awesome.

As we are sitting in the truck doing the BrainTrust Skype call to the convention. A whole group shows up by the SUV.

So I did a little impromptu "Protect your head talk" and they all went back to there Church. It was truly moving. I met a couple of women there as well that were so supportive and great.
As I continued my run. I was jogging along and Winston ran up to me. Now I didn't see Winston coming. I was listening to my music and all the sudden he was there (see the video I posted earlier) He was fantastic and we had a great run.

My run for the day came to an end. While I found some energy from the people in Wagmatsook at about the 31kl mark. I was running out of gas. So we called it a day.

On our way back I wanted to stop at this store I saw during my run. It's called Wagmatcook Center and Monica and Charles Googoo opened up the store for us. I told them about the little girl we met and they not only knew her but Keanna's mom made the little drum. So I picked up a couple other little collectibles and thanked for there time.

It was truly a very moving day. Both physically and mentally. I was really touched by the spirit and the friendship that this town had. It meant allot.

Through Dalem Lake, and New Harris Settlement and beyond

Through Dalem Lake, and New Harris Settlement and beyond by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

Ran for 30kl at about the 15kl mark I hit a hill that came with a warning

I kicked that hills but!!

Judy and Gerry were with me to cheer on the Great Hill Challenge of 2011

The top of the hill came with a trail. If I still did not have to run the rest of the marathon. I would have gone scenic!!

I stopped at about the 30kl mark. Then we headed into to meet Mayor John Morgan and have it declared "Run to Remember Day" in Cape Breton.

He was a great guy and we had a great time.

After meeting with the Mayor and unsuccessfully getting him to join me for a run(something about the suit I think), we did some much needed shopping for food and headed back to Run Stop, and continued on to make it a full 42 kl today.

So I am a little sleep deprived however I am feeling fantastic and looking forward to tomorrow!!

Final run in Newfoundland!! by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

Final run in Newfoundland!! by temporallobe at Garmin Connect - Details

Not only did I run this area by myself. I ran it with my Mom and Dad.

I ran 20 minutes with my Mom. Judy.

I then ran for 20 minutes with my Dad Gerry.

Then we got to rest a little bit as I had a run with Gale.

Now she was a true runner. This is a lady that has run 3 marathons in the last 6 months or so. That is crazy!! Then I met up with the Assistant Mayor and he declared it Run To Remember in Port Aux Basques

Then Gale and I headed off for the last 2kl to the Ferry Terminal.

We then waited in the Motor-home in the port. We boarded MV Highlanders @ 9:30 then set sale at 11:00.

I apologize for the poor Audio. This was our cabin on the boat. Mom and Dad below and Melissa and I in the bunks up top. It was long night. I did not sleep well.

Through South Branch, Doyles and St Andrews

In Newfoundland there is a famous area of wind that has been none to reach upwards of 200kl an hour. It blows over vehicles. It is called Wreck House. Every year trucks and Motor-homes, busses and crazy runners. Get blown around.

I ran this area on May 3rd.
